GAMBLING ADDICTION: A great loss amidst pleasure of winning

LEGAZPI CITY, May 10, 2017 - “If you’re unable to control the urge  to gamble,  you may have  a gambling addiction.” This was said by Dr. Gregorio S. Tan, a renowned psychiatrist in Albay in an interview over DZGB’s Radio Klinika hosted by VP Henry Maceda.   Tan said that the stimulation of the brain’s pleasure center leads to addiction.

Dr. Tan said that gambling addiction  can impact negatively  in our financial  situation, and including relationships. He further added that a person with gambling addiction may display some behaviors like: obsessing any type of gambling, gambling to feel better about life, stealing money to gamble, and taking bigger  and bigger risks while gambling.

People with gambling addiction  don’t always gamble frequently, but when they do start gambling, they may be unable to stop, said Dr. Tan. He said that depression usually spark gambling addiction.

However,  he said that gambling addiction is manageable. Gambling addicts should be diverted to other areas of pleasure or simply change lifestyle. Avoiding places  and situations  that can trigger  the urge to gamble can help a lot. (Mar de la Cruz)
