DOT 5 THWART PROPOSED MAYON ROAD NETWORK

LEGAZPI CITY (November 9) –  The Department of Tourism Regional Office in Bicol have stood firm their opposition to the Department of Public Works and Highways’(DPWH) proposed plan for a road network inside the protected area and 6 kilometer radius permanent danger zone of Mayon Volcano Natural Park from Lidong, Sto. Domingo Albay to Mayon Skyline Hotel in Buang, Tabaco City.

This was disclosed by Rommel A. Natanauan – Chief Tourism Development and Regulations Division of DOT5 in an exclusive interview with DZGB News. Natanauan said that it is not included in tourism infrastructure and in violation of the National Protected Area System (NIPAS) Act of 1992. “We stand firm in support of the stand of the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources that the proposed road project is in violation of existing environmental laws”, Natanauan added.

Earlier the EMB-DENR issued a cease and desist order to 1st DPWH Engineering District and Hi-tone construction in implementing the project with the absence of valid and legal Environmental Compliance Certificate and permit issued by the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB). Environmentalists opposed the proposed Mayon Road Network Project due to eminent danger posed  amidst the destruction of the biodiversity inside the Mayon Volcano Natural Park. (Mar de la Cruz)
