RESILIENCE CARAVAN KICKED-OFF IN ALBAY



LEGAZPI CITY (November 22) - The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council in cooperation with the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) Bicol  and the Department of Education Regional Office 5 celebrated this year’s National Disaster Resilience Month with the launching of the Resilience Caravan Wednesday at the Ibalong Centrum for Recreation, Brgy. Bitano, this city.

With the theme “4Ks: Kamalayan sa Kahandaan, Katumbas ay Kaligtasan”, the celebration highlighted several demonstrations and static displays of DRR capabilities  which aims to educate young people on protective mechanisms and actions available to save lives and protect people's livelihood during emergencies and disasters from Legazpi City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (LCDRRMC), Dept. of Education (DepED), Phil. Army (PA), Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Philipine Air Force (PAF), Dept. of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Dept. of Health (DOH), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) , Albay Provincial Public Safety and Emergency Management Office (APPSEMO, Philipine Navy (PN), Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Counci (RDRRMC, Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) and National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA). OCD 5 Regional Dir. Claudio Yucot in an exclusive interview with DZGB News  said that the caravan was participated by 800 Grades 4 to 6 elementary pupils from both the Albay and City Schools Division. Yucot also supported the recommendation of APPSEMO Chief Dr. Cedric Daep to incorporate the Disaster Resilience subject in the school curriculum. “It is vital that at an early age, children must know what are the usage and how to use the various tools and equipments plus knowledge of the impact of any hazards in the community because in areas where disaster frequently happened children are most vulnerable”, Yucot added. He said that OCD 5 will also replicate the caravan to the different provinces of  the Bicol Region. (Mar de la Cruz with reports from Luence Burce Barcena)
