MAYON VOLCANO ERRUPTION: AGRICULTURE DAMAGE RISES TO 100.7M





LEGAZPI CITY (Jan 25) – The cost damage to agriculture in areas affected by Mayon Volcano eruption has risen to P100.7 million with the rice subsector sustaining the most damage, Albay Provincial Agriculturist Che Rebeta reported Thursday during the press briefing on Mayon Volcano 2018 Eruption Updates at the Albay Public Safety and Emergency Office, here.

Damage incurred on rice soared to P73.3 million with 11,735.21 metric tons of production lost. Damaged were 2,933.80 hectares with 50% chance of recovery and affected 2,044 farmers.

Losses incurred on assorted vegetables/rootcrops reached P19.8 million with 35,988 MT of produce lost. Affected were 805.38 hectares and 3,092 farmers.

The value of damage to corn is now placed at P7.5 million with 291.30 MT of produce lost. Affected were 36.41 hectares with slim chance of recovery.

Livestock and fisheries subsector has yet to submit damage report as of this writing. Rebeta added that Gov. Al Francis Bichara has requested the Dept. of Agriculture to come up with a livelihood option for the affected farmers to ease the economic impact on the damage to agriculture. Meanwhile, DA Region 5 Regional Executive Director Dr. Elena B. de los Santos had already requested for approval by the DA Central Office a livelihood option amounting to P64.7 million pesos.
