ONLY 4 OUT OF 643 BARANGAYS IN ALBAY “DRUG-CLEARED” - PDEA

LEGAZPI CITY (Mar 24)  - The Province of Albay posted a slight victory in the campaign against illegal drugs.  Of 643 barangays affected, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) has finally been able to declare only four clear of illegal drugs.

This was disclosed in the 1st Quarter Joint Regional Peace and Order-Regional Management Coordinating Council Meeting cum Awarding Ceremony  for Drug Free and Drug-Cleared Barangays in Region 5  on Friday. Barangays Aurora, Rizal and White Deer of the municipality of Jovellar and Cullat of Ligao City were declared  “drug-cleared” by PDEA. Other Bicol provinces recorded drug-cleared barangays as follows: Sorsogon 48 barangays out of 331 affected; Camarines Norte 27 out of 259; Camarines Sur 10 out of 824; Catanduanes 6 out of 238  and Masbate 0 out of 339 affected barangays.

However, Legazpi City Mayor Noel E. Rosal - incumbent RPOC chair sees some points of improvement in the parameters wielded to classify affected areas and the implementation of the joint One Time-Big Time Operation of the different law enforcement agencies. A “drug-cleared” status means that authorities have validated the non-availability of narcotics supplies in the barangay, and the absence of drug transit or trans-shipment activities, clandestine illegal drugs laboratories, clandestine illegal drugs warehouses, clandestine chemical warehouses, marijuana cultivation sites, illegal drug dens, dives, or resorts; and the absence of illegal drug pushers, users, dependents, protectors, coddlers and financiers.

Rosal said its high-time to activate the  Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Council (BADAC) in all barangays not only in Albay but throughout the region to effectively implement the war on drugs. Validation for considered drug affected is on-going to determine the seriously-affected, moderately affected and slightly affected barangays.

The occasion was graced by Dir. Gen. Aaron Aquino-Executive Director Phil. Drug Enforcement Agency, DILG Asec for Peace and Order Alexander L. Macario, Catalino S. Cuy, DILG Regional Dir. Elouisa T. Pastor, NEDA-Bicol Regional Dir. Agnes M. Espinas-Tolentino, Gov.Robert Lee Rodrigueza of Sorsogon and Gov. Joseph Cua of Catanduanes.  (Mar de la Cruz with reports from Al Armario)
